So-called zombie computers are driving the increased levels of spam being directed at home broadband users and businesses, according to a new study.

Research from security vendor PandaLabs found that more than ten million PCs infected by bots are distributing spam and malware every day.

Zombie computers are systems infected by bots or small programs dropped on computers that enable cyber criminals to take remote control of the system.

Between April and June 2008, almost three-quarters of all received email was spam.

Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs, said spam is annoying for home users and disruptive to businesses.

Last month, a large amount of fraudulent spam was sent to broadband users, claiming to originate from the Beijing Olympic Committee. The fraudulent emails told account holders they had won a prize.

Broadband users should make sure they have the latest patches and security updates, and check whether their PCs and terminals are configured securely.
