Government 'Broadband for all' scheme to pilot in February

The first 20,000 families to benefit from the government's plan to provide broadband access to every home in the UK have been selected.
A total of £300 million is being spent on the scheme, which has been outlined by schools minister Jim Knight.
Oldham and Suffolk will be the first places where the plan will be implemented, with low-income families eligible for grants of between £100 and £700 to buy a computer, software or internet access for one year.

Edinburgh 'has 100,000 homes without broadband'

Recent research has revealed that Edinburgh currently has more than 100,000 households without a broadband connection.
According to the Office of Communications and the General Office of Statistics Scotland, Virgin Media has announced that it will provide 1,000 homes each month with free connection, reports the Edinburgh News.
These houses will get the fastest broadband package that Virgin offers in a bid to raise the online representation of the city.

MPs recognise importance of broadband

Prominent figures in both the Labour and the Conservative partiy's have unveiled plans to improve the level of broadband access in the country.
At the Labour party conference in Manchester, prime minister Gordon Brown announced a new scheme to provide "broadband for all."
The estimated cost of the initiative is £300 million, the aim of which is to get low-income families connected to the internet.
