Cardiff could be first to get BT's 100Mbps broadband

Cardiff could be first to get BT's 100Mbps broadband Cardiff could be one of the first cities in the UK to receive BT's next-generation fibre optic broadband.

If the city's councillors are successful in their talks with BT chairman Sir Michael Rake, the Welsh capital could enjoy connection speeds of up to 100Mbs, reports Wales Online.

Sir Rake commented: "You just look at the way technology is developing, with the iPlayer for example, higher-definition television, people using broadband the whole time to access education."

He added that it was likely that there would be a massive increase in the demand for higher speeds in the future due to the rapidly developing technology and rise in the variety of users of the internet.

While copper wiring allows speeds of 24Mbps, the new system could see a "huge improvement" when the fibre optic cables are installed.

A recent report on next-generation broadband called on the government to "act now to support investment" in the services, although it did not recommend that the state should provide financial backing.
