More women "enjoying internet gambling"
Increasing numbers of women are using their broadband connections to gamble, it has been revealed.
Research undertaken by the Gambling Commission during July found that 8.8 per cent of the UK's adults had taken part in some form of remote betting during the previous month.
The figure was identical to that discovered when a similar survey was carried out last year.
However, the statistics also showed that 6.5 per cent of women had partaken in remote gambling, compared with the six per cent identified in 2007's study.
Responding to the results, the Remote Gambling Association's business director Brian Wright said that online betting is much more "female friendly" than traditional alternatives.
He explained that betting shops are often male-dominated environments, adding: "Online you don't have any of those barriers and a woman is treated in the same way as any other player."
The fact that games such as online bingo and internet poker tend to appeal to women also influenced the figures, Mr Wright concluded.
