Broadband users in Hull were affected by a fault with internet provider Karoo on Wednesday, which resulted in almost 40,000 customers losing their connection.
As Hull was not made a part of BT during nationalisation, it has meant that Karoo has a monolopoly on the city, which is already the subject of an Ofcom investigation.
The broadband company sent a statement to the Register explaining: "Our engineers are working to rectify the fault and we aim to resume normal service as soon as possible."
It added: "In the meantime we would like to apologise for the inconvenience this issue has caused to our customers."
Karoo is part of the Kcom Group and is the only ADSL-based fixed-network broadband service available for those whose phones are controlled by Kingston Communications.
However, the company claims that any internet service provider could introduce "its own broadband services via Kingston Communications' network".
