Search engine giant Google was once again the most visited website in September, with more than 28 million unique visitors from the UK during the month, new figures show.
Google's stranglehold over British broadband users is such that 89 per cent of the UK internet market used Google or its affiliates during the month, statistics from comScore suggest.
Microsoft, eBay and Yahoo! all trail Google in the top ten most visited sites, however, Wikipedia saw a 15 per cent growth during the month as the new school year started. The biggest growth throughout the whole UK market was seen at Fish4's sites, which grew by 34 per cent during September.
Bob Ivins, executive vice-president of international markets at comScore, said: "To see traffic mirror what is happening in the general population is another example of how pervasive and engrained the internet is in people's everyday lives. The start of the school year drove traffic to online retail sites, encyclopedia sites, and career sites."
In related news, Google's advertising revenues are set to outstrip those of the UK's biggest commercial TV channel, ITV1, according to the Guardian.
