Recent research has revealed that Edinburgh currently has more than 100,000 households without a broadband connection.

According to the Office of Communications and the General Office of Statistics Scotland, Virgin Media has announced that it will provide 1,000 homes each month with free connection, reports the Edinburgh News.

These houses will get the fastest broadband package that Virgin offers in a bid to raise the online representation of the city.

Virgin Media's XL package offers speeds of up to 20Mbps and those connected by Virgin will receive a free trial of the service for one month.

With such a large number of houses devoid of broadband internet access, the government is falling short of its bid to get every home in the UK connected to a high-speed connection.

Ashley Stockwell, brand and marketing managing director at Virgin Media, commented: "Fibre optic broadband is fast and future-proof, so surfers in Edinburgh will get a chance to experience the net as it should be – superfast and reliable."

However, it is not yet known why so many homes in the Scottish capital do not have a fast connection.

According to ISP Review, the shortage may be as much a matter of choice as it is of coverage.

As well as promoting its products in Edinburgh by signing up homes for free, Virgin Media has launched a campaign to target commuters passing through Euston rail station.

It is using a 73-metre billboard with the words "broad" and "band" at the beginning and the end.

This makes Virgin the first company to advertise on Euston Broadside the advert will be the longest outdoor rail ad space in the UK.
