In order for legal downloading sites to succeed, it is necessary for consumers to be properly educated about purchasing music online.

At least this is according to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which stated that illegal acquisition of music online is widely recognised has being detrimental to the sector.

A spokesperson for the BPI commented: "For these legal services to be a success we also need to educate consumers about digital music."

It was added that potential customers must be taught the benefits of legal purchases and told where they can find them.

Figures released by the body in June 2008 reveal that revenues outside direct sales of music now account for 11.4 per cent of companies' domestic totals.

Radiohead released their last album for free online but it was found that large numbers of broadband users still downloaded it illegally via torrent sites.

Almost 400,000 copies of the album were acquired illegitimately off the web on the first day it was available.
