Several retailers brought forward their traditional Boxing Day sales by offering discounts online on Christmas Day.
Marks and Spencer was one of the retailers that enjoyed an online surge in sales, as it launched sales prices at midnight on Christmas Day for festive broadband surfers.
A spokesperson for the retailer said "online shopping is becoming more and more popular as confidence has grown in delivery and security from websites".
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has predicted post-Christmas record sales this year, blaming the credit crunch for making customers more tempted by discounted items.
"With a challenging first half of the year virtually guaranteed for all consumer-facing businesses, retailers will be discounting well into 2008," explained Kevin Hawkins, the BRC's director general.
A recent Post Office Broadband study suggested that one in five web users online on Christmas Day would make a purchase, while edigitalresearch and Secure Trading research showed £370 million was spent on internet shopping in the run up to Christmas.
