Parents with home broadband who are concerned about protecting their children should communicate with them about the potential dangers, according to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.
A representative has spoken about the need to instil behavioural patterns in young people, who are using the internet from as young as five years old.
She explained: "Our position is this: there is no substitute for actually sitting down with your kids and actually asking them what they are doing online."
It has been revealed by industry watchdog Ofcom that two-thirds of children watch television, listen to the radio and use the internet without an adult being there at the time, which could mean those with accessible broadband need to be aware of which sites are being used by their children.
It has also been noted by the ONS that, in 2007, close to 15 million households had internet access and that interest in convenient online access is increasing.
