Birmingham councillor calls for cheap broadband

Birmingham councillor calls for cheap broadband Help should be given to families who cannot afford broadband, according to Birmingham city councillor Les Lawrence.

Councillor Lawrence has asked that broadband providers provide assistance so that all young people can have internet access, after government figures show that 800,000 pupils do not have broadband at home.

He explained: "21st century children and young people wishing to achieve economic wellbeing when they leave full-time education need to have the skills required by 21st century employers."

A joint initiative between broadband providers, the government, local authorities and IT charities is required, said Mr Lawrence.

Birmingham city council has provided 2,000 pupils with laptops in January alone, after a £5.7 million government grant.

Meanwhile, a recent survey by TalkTalk showed that 64 per cent of people believe the government should ensure all children have access to the internet at home, with 70 per cent of parents believing that the internet enhances their children's education.
