UK broadband subscription up by a third Boosted by increasing competition between providers, higher speeds and lower costs, the number of UK broadband users jumped by a third in 2006.

Some 13,983,900 broadband connections are now in use in the UK, making it the seventh most broadband populated country in the world, behind the US, China, Japan, Germany, South Korea and France, according to a survey by web data firm Point Topic.

Worldwide, DSL remains the favoured internet connection and now has 65.7 per cent of the market share. This rises to 82 per cent within the EU and 87 per cent in the Middle East and Africa, the fastest growing broadband region.

Overall, broadband uptake grew by 31 per cent between the fourth quarter of 2005 in the same period in 2006. By the end of last year the worldwide figure stood at 281.3 million.

At 152 per cent uptake in India is growing fastest in India, followed by Turkey with an 88 per cent over the course of the year.
