Plan to get Britons online announced

Plan to get Britons online announced Broadband use could become more widespread, as a government strategy to get all UK citizens online is announced.

Developments were announced in a mission statement delivered by minister for digital inclusion Paul Murphy, who pledged to get those not connected to the internet online, reports the BBC.

Mr Murphy reportedly told the National Digital Inclusion Conference: "We came up with the following mission statement: To coordinate policies and a coherent strategy that all citizens, especially the disadvantaged, can benefit from new technologies."

Currently a third of the population do not have access to a computer at home. These people, Mr Murphy explained, were likely to be either older or disadvantaged either geographically or economically.

In September last year, broadband provider BT launched its Crossing the Divide initiative, which aimed to deal with technophobia and educate those currently excluded from the internet.

Research from BT showed that some consumers found logging on to the internet for the first time as stressful as doing a bungee jump.
