P2P market 'to net ISPs nearly £14bn in 5 years'

P2P market 'to net ISPs nearly £14bn in 5 years' The worldwide peer-to-peer market could earn ISPs nearly $28 billion (£13.9 billion) over the next five years, a study has concluded.

As more ISPs offer legitimate file-sharing and downloading services, profits for those carriers are expected to rise rapidly, Insight Research found.

The market research group found that the growth in technical convergence, streaming and video telephony is fuelling the growth in peer-to-peer services and will continue to do so until at least 2011.

Robert Rosenberg, president of Insight Research, said: "Peer-to-peer and file sharing services have moved into the mainstream and are now well beyond the early days when a few of the early service providers ended up in litigation."

Technological convergence, where many internet providers are linking up with mobile and television networks to produce product 'bundles', was noted by Ofcom as one of the main reasons why broadband uptake is at its highest ever level.
