Google takes on the universe
Search engine giant Google has launched a revamped version of its popular Google Earth programme, in which users can view the sky as seen from planet Earth.
Its new service, named Google Sky, allows computer users to tour space and watch the stars from the comfort of their living rooms.
High resolution imagery, taken from numerous telescopes across the globe, enables users to navigate through approximately 100 million stars and 200 million galaxies. The 3D map can be accessed through Google Earth, with surfers who download the new Sky application able to look to the heavens from any point on Earth.
Lior Ron, Google product manager, said: "We're excited to provide users with rich astronomical imagery and enhanced content that enables them to both learn about what they're seeing above and tell their own stories. By working with some of the industry's leading experts, we've been able to transform Google Earth into a virtual telescope."
Last month, Google reported revenues of $3.87 billion (£1.93 billion) for the three months to the end of June, an increase of 58 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2006.
