'AOL to charge consumers outside select areas'

'AOL to charge consumers outside select areas' Broadband provider AOL has made the decision to ask its customers for a £10 per month surcharge if they do not live in a selected area.

The move, which is thought to relate to about 40 per cent of the population – will cause its Silver package to jump from £14.99 to £24.99, reports uk-bug.net.

Consumers will also be required to sign an 18-month contract and it is thought that the charge is only likely to be applied after the contract term has been reached.

The firm appears to be following in the footsteps of parent company The Carphone Warehouse, which also charges a premium to customers who do not access their broadband services through one of their own local loop unbundled exchanges.

AOL recently decided to disable images in its email service as part of a recent revamp. The move will be made by default as the company joins others which have made similar moves of late; however images will not be blocked if the sender appears on the firm's Enhanced Whitelist.
