AOL offers safe search engine

AOL offers safe search engine Broadband firm AOL has been named as having the safest search engine in an investigation conducted by security company McAfee.

Meanwhile, the study found Yahoo to be the worst in its study, which involved analysis of the first 50 search results returned by Google, MSN, Yahoo, AOL and Ask.

The results highlight that more than 276 million searches every month have resulted in people being directed to websites which offer spam email, spyware, adware or viruses.

Despite the findings, the firm also discovered however that results generated by search engines have become safer, mainly because of the enhanced safety of sponsored results on some of the engine's websites.

McAfee stated that the overall improvement was encouraging, but warned that search engine users face a number of security risks when looking for results.

The most dangerous search terms were found to relate to music and technology, with the phrase digital music returning the most risky results, the survey showed.

Recent reports from Globe and Mail suggest that AOL may be merged with another company in the future, with its fate being decided by the end of the year, MarketingVox.com reports.
