Works for us

Review by: RobSheridan, 29/02/2008 at 13:22:19
Signed up with Virgin when I moved into a flat recently with 3 mates – this stuff about only having one computer per connection is rubbish, all of us have computers and/or laptops and we manage to connect fine. Obviosuly it's not perfect, especially when we all try to connect at once during peak times.

We’re on the Size L 4MB broadband, and we have the Talk Unlimited phone package, and as a result we get the basic Virgin Media TV service thrown into the deal – cant say we really watch much telly tbh, but its nice to have a freebie. We save loads on the phone calls as line rental is included, and the internet service, bar peak time throttling does what it says on the tin. 4MB pretty much all the time.

Have to say, the customer service is terrible, but then again, it’s just as bad as anywhere else. Luckily, we’ve only had to contact them once.

When they are good they are very very good but when they are bad...

I've been a Virgin Media/NTL customer for just over a year.
I have been with NTL in the past in another house and must say then the service was terrible, shoddy customer service and TV & broadband would pack in for hours on end every couple of days.
With this service however I've been really pleasantly surprised, the service has never dropped that I can tell and it's blisteringly fast as expected.
My only qualms I have with the service is the unfair line throttling that takes place every time I hit 3.5gb download. I called Virgin and they explained prior to the commencement that this probably wouldn't affect me and would only actually affect about 5% of the Virgin Media customers. Well this has proved to be a load of rubbish. 3.5gb is nothing nawadays and practically every night I end up paying the already inflated price for a line speed I didn't choose. I personally think it's illegal and immoral for them to alter the terms & conditions without the ability to cancel my contract. But stick it out I have and recently I managed to negotiate an (albeit pathetic) discount for the next 6 months.
Ideally I would like to half my broadband speed for a reduction in price but I'm not prepared to drop to their rather feeble middle package which is 4meg which is barely above their bottom package of 2meg. I have said that I would recommend this service if just for the guaranteed line speed (when not throttled) but have had to give them an average score for speed which is personally what I think it averages to to. Hopefully when their 50meg service is released they will restructure their prices to reflect a fairer pricing system. But we are still light years behing the rest of Europe (Where for instance the Swedish pay approximately £15 per month for a 50 meg up and download line!). We are being held to ransom because there is only one cable provider and no real high speed alternative to Virgin!

fibre is the future

I switched to Virgin from ADSL when I found out I could get cable in my area, and the difference in speed is remarkable, and I can download pretty much as much as my computer can handle.

In the beginning I had a few problems with dropped connections, but the problems soon ironed themselves out, and there’s been a few times where the connection speed has dropped way under the advertised but generally everything\'s good. Customer service definety needs improving though.

Great download speeds

Review by: Steve, 19/12/2007 at 09:36:01
I upgraded to the 20 meg XL package a month or so ago and am definitely pleased with the results. Little to no downtime, and close to top speeds at most hours of the day; it only struggles slightly around 6pm, but that's to be expected with any package. Great value as part of a bundle if you go for the XL broadband combined with the phone & tv 2 for £20 bundle.

20Mb Virgin Media Connection

Review by: james_db, 19/12/2007 at 09:33:10
I have been with Virgin now (formerly NTL) for the last three years. I have recently upgraded to a 20Mb connection and have been very impressed with the speed of my connection so far. I am now able to download vast amounts of data much quicker than I ever have been able to previously and so far have not seemed to have any limits put on my usage.

I have to say that the reliability in my area has been good and the only slight problem I had was having to get a new modem to handle the 20Mb connection as you can't get it through the digital box.
